Goose Show Review - 10/9/22 and 10/16/22 Austin City Limits
As a part of the 2022 Austin City Limits festival, Goose took over the Barton Springs stage for a 75-minute sunset performance on both Sundays.
Graced with absolutely beautiful weather for both performances, the band played festival sets heavy on Dripfield material and catalogue classics.
The first performance on October 9th kicked off with a strong “Hungersite” that melted sans-jam into “Silver Rising”. A crazy tension-filled straightforward rendition of “Arcadia” kept up the momentum before a surprise appearance of The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio” – not a song I was expecting to see in a festival set.
The album arrangement of “Slow Ready” got the crowd dancing before Peter used the arpeggiator ending to blend perfectly into a raging “Dripfield”. “Hot Tea” closed the set out, a move that was expected and thoroughly enjoyed.
On October 16th, we arrived at the festival much earlier and had the opportunity to catch incredible performances from Spoon and The Marias before Goose’s set.
At the stroke of 7pm, we sang Jeff “Happy Birthday” as the band walked on stage and started up “Borne”. Using the album transition into “Hungersite”, Goose demonstrated that they would indeed be playing repeats from the prior week, likely due to much of the audience being different.
A rocking and slightly extended “Animal” really got the crowd grooving ahead of “Arcadia”. The festival crowd went absolutely WILD for this jam as Rick seemed unwilling to end the raging peak. “Dripfield” was up next and saw Peter leave his keyboard rig to get up close with Rick during the jam.
Gorgeous ballad “726” offered more soaring guitar lines before the set wrapped up with a high energy “Creatures” -> “Shama Lama Ding Dong” combination. As the band dropped into “Shama”, Peter noted that the song was dedicated to Jeff for his birthday.
While the two Austin City Limits sets were light on the jamming, as one would expect, I have no doubt that many new fans were converted – I may be biased, but there was not another band at the festival who put on a more consistently engaging performance than Goose.
Shout out to Goose’s incredible crew for all their hard work on tour and at the festival!!
The band returns to the road with the Trey Anastasio Band in November.
