Electronic duo Big Gigantic performed in Toronto last night as part of the Road to KN¿WHERE concert series, anticipating the September music festival that will take place a few hours north of the city.
It’s always interesting to me when I see a show outside of my usual jamband niche, both for the music and crowd vibes – and last night reminded me of the many similarities between a jam crowd and an EDM crowd. Not least due to the shirts at the merch table with a dictionary definition of “wook.”
Big G performed as the headlining act after several hours of supporting DJs, but the crowd was as amped at 1am as they would have been earlier in the night and brought a fiery response to drummer Jeremy Salken and saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli’s nearly 90-minute set.
The duo went heavy on material from their upcoming album FLUORESCENCE, including recently-released single “Move Around,” a track that lots of the crowd knew all the words and sequenced drops to.
Lalli alternated between triggering tracks and samples on his DJ workstation and throwing in saxophone licks while Salken held down an impressive pocket throughout, utilizing a live drum kit in a setting that normally wouldn’t have any real instruments on stage.
The set came to a close with the unreleased “In The City,” a collaboration between the duo and producer Daily Bread that brought the house down one last time with a final blast of lasers.
While last night definitely reaffirmed to me that electronic music (and a 1am start time) is definitely not my thing, I gained a higher level of appreciation for those who do love it and really enjoyed the sense of community and presence that permeated last night.
Big Gigantic’s next performance comes at the upcoming Bonnaroo festival, kicking off a summer on the circuit that culminates with their annual Rowdytown show at Red Rocks in late September.
