Neal Francis’ 2023 winter tour stopped at Toronto’s Velvet Underground last night, marking the Chicago native’s first headlining performance in the city.
After a standout opening set for Marcus King back in September, the capacity crowd was ready and eager for the full-set experience.
Beginning the evening off was Danielle Ponder, whose powerful and emotional vocals got the crowd in the mood – her set was highlighted by an amazing cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
Francis and his band took the stage and launched into “Alameda Apartments,” the keyboardist immediately filling the room with shimmering waves of Yamaha CP70 piano. “Problems” was tapped next and featured some serious fretboard fireworks from guitarist Kellen Beanzma.
“This Time” saw Francis move over to his Hammond A-100 organ to send sustained blasts of the Leslie-powered instrument across the crowd.
“Say Your Prayers” got taken out for a spin next and highlighted the rhythm section of drummer Collin O’Brien and bassist Mike Starr as they broke the groove down into a propulsive and funky section.
“Changes” led into “She’s A Winner,” a raucous number that saw Francis and his band practically leaping in the air with energy as they hit crescendo after crescendo on the rocking song.
“Don’t Want You To Know” and the lengthy “Prometheus” continued the set’s flow and energy ahead of “Very Fine.” “Can’t Stop The Rain” and “BNYLV” closed out Francis’ set before a “Sentimental Garbage” encore brought the night to a close.
Neal Francis’ concerts blend genres and unmistakable 70s musical style with high energy, catchy hooks, and tight musicianship. He and his band are NOT to be missed – see them by any means necessary!!
Thank you to Neal for taking the time to film a rig tour video before the show – stay tuned for that release in February!
Neal Francis tour continues on January 31st in Baltimore.
